Read Between the Bars is a nonhierarchical, grassroots organization in Tucson that was established in March 2007. We focus on getting free books directly into the hands of people incarcerated in the state of Arizona. RBtB is solely volunteer-based.

Our simple philosophy is that a book can change a life. It can give an escape from the tedium of prison, teach new skills, and open up interests in fields that can benefit the individual now and when they rejoin society.

As allies to people in prison, we work to provide educational and entertainment materials. Our organization strives to inform our community of the toll that the prison-industrial complex imposes on the incarcerated, their families, and society as a whole. Locally we serve as part of the global movement toward prison reform.

If you have a family member, friend, or loved one who could benefit from the Read Between the Bars program, please forward them our P.O. Box address so they can write us with book requests. Se habla español.
